Chicago: The Windy City

Having seen the capital of Illinois during the summer, we decide to try the thrill (it is better to say!) Also visit the city during the celebrations of New Year.
The winter in the northern United States is a true winter, cold, snowy, extreme. Here are some tips for those who decide to visit this wonderful city, even braving the extreme temperatures in January.
Flight
We flew Air One from Rome, via Milan Malpensa directly to Chicago. The flight went well, although puntuale seats are rather "strettini". But in the end we can not complain.
Hotel
We booked on the internet Hotel71 (http://www.hotel71.com/). Excellent hotel, centrally located just a few steps from the blue line metro (station "Clark") that comes directly from O'Hare. We paid a splendid double € 52 per night. With a small supplement you can choose to have a room with a view of the Chicago River. I must say that there is much needed because the city view is wonderful in every case. Top floor (38th th) there is a magnificent Ballroom at H24 where you can get to admire the 360 degree view of the city. Other services available to clients are the internet with high speed and a gymnasium. Of course all services are available 24 hours a day. There is also the possibility to have breakfast at the hotel but the prices are really exaggerated. If you get off the streets at 20 meters on the left there is a wonderful place to have breakfast. The rooms are very large and clean though not modern. Missing frigobar but there is TV, the stereo, the hair dryer, table and iron.
Location
The location was perfect because it is located in the north of the Loop (ie downtowon / downtown Chicago) and a few steps from Michigan Avenue, the shopping paradise and those who love shopping.
Well connected by public transport, both underground and with many buses to reach in few minutes all the places in Chicago.
Eat
Impossible to give tips to eat in Chicago. You Magyar anything at any price. Walk and look around and choose! I can only give you some impressions on what we have done.
Mexican cuisine: "Su Casa" (49 E Ontario Ave, At N Wabash Ave) in a side of Michigan Avenue. It eats well and good, friendly atmosphere, lots of people and excellent food (not to speak of Margarita, in the "Frozen Strawberry"). On average we spend about $ 20 a head to get out really full.
Chinese cuisine: you can not eat Chinese in Chinatown. Find the place that you like best and that inspires you, and revenue ... buttatevi! Do not come in Italy, where ordered 10 different dishes to taste! The portions are huge and not be able to eat everything.
Kitchen South: Heaven of Seven (http://www.heavenonseven.com/). Excellent restaurant in Louisiana. Even in this case if you go at peak expect to sit. Huge dishes (try the famous Jambalaya).
Shopping
The shopping street par excellence is North Michigan Avenue, also known as the "Magnificent Mile", which includes the two stations of the subway red line "Grand" and "Chicago" (the area between the other of many local restaurants). The shops you find on the Mile are those of the big brands and the prices are pretty interesting, do you want to change in favor of the dollar or for the economic crisis that has forced the U.S. to shop anticipate seasonal balances. A tip: if you love shopping, games with a suitcase "empty." Trust: includes everything in place.
Music
It 'the city of blues and jazz. For the blues have spoken well dell'House of Blues (329 N. Dearborn), but we went to a place where, at the suggestion of Tourism Chicago, playing the Jazz and is a bit outside the traditional routes and tourist destinations (such as the House of Blues). The restaurant is called Andy's (11 E. Hubbard St.) and is a very nice place. You pay $ 5 to enter and if you want you can eat (discreetly tell us) or you can go to bars to drink and hear live jazz (3 hour concert). All'House of Blues, just to give you an idea we have requested $ 45 a head for the concert on Sunday morning (1.5 hours) and the brunch. We felt it was really too much.
Skyline
To best enjoy the magnificent skyline of Chicago, there are the following places. Tip: Scheduled tours at sunset, because the spectacle of lights will leave you breathless.
- Navy Pier. You can reach by bus 2,29,65,66 or 124. This is the area of entertainment in Chicago, with an amusement park and ferris wheel and an area of restaurants and shops enjoyable even with the cold because indoors. Not eating well and is usually very crowded during the summer during which there are lots of tables outside. I must point out as characteristic restaurant "Bubba Gump" (remember the movie with Tom Hanks?). Great place to admire the skyline and summer to make the tourist boat on the lake or rent a bike and roller blade.
- North Avenue Beach. Magnificent Mile From there you can go with the following buses: 151, 147, 146, 145. It takes 10 minutes and this is the area north of Chicago with a very large beach. Very good visual on the city.
- Little Italy or Greektown (Racine metro station). Get a tour of those parts and admire the skyline from the Sears Tower.
Sears Tower
Admission $ 12. Attention to the file (which can be quite long). He is currently the highest building in the U.S. (after the demolition of the Twin Towers) and I recommend a trip to get to floor 103 to over 400 meters above the ground.
Loop
E 'la zone offices in Chicago, where skyscrapers against the highest and most beautiful. During the day is very busy but far less in the evening. In the loop is to be seen (and use) the tube raised from the ground (if you have never seen an episode of ER you know what I'm talking about). There are several places to eat for lunch and lots of fast food. Attention in the evening because some roads may be found rather "desolate" and not very popular.
Old Town
The north side of Chicago. Neighborhood very nice to see all the chic area of the Gold Cost (Astor avenue). There is the concentration of the most beautiful houses of Chicago and is certainly one of the most attention. In Old Town you want to report a shop that sells many beautiful types of spices, The Spice Town (1512 North Wells Street) http://www.thespicehouse.com/
I recommend not resist.

 

Quartieri etnici

Non potete fare a meno di fare un giro, nei quartieri “etnici” di Chicago. Noi non abbiamo avuto alcun problema, siamo andati di giorno e anche senza vedere moltissimi turisti in giro, nessuno ci ha dato fastidio.
- Chinatown (fermata della metropolitana Chinatown-Cermak). È una zona piuttosto ampia di Chicago, dedicata ad ospitare l’enorme comunità cinese della città. Tutto è cinese: dalle scritte sui negozi, ai menù dei ristoranti e dei negozi. E’ da vedere e ovviamente se vi piace la cucina non mancate un assaggio
- Little Italy. Piuttosto piccola, con case ordinate e nomi delle strade che sono state dedicate a personaggi italo-americani dai cognomi che evocano lontani ricordi mafiosi. Non c’è molto da vedere se non qualche negozio e qualche ristorante ma sinceramente non è nulla di paragonabile alla zona cinese
- Greektown. È il quartiere che ospita l’enorme comunità greca. Tantissimi negozi e ristorante che offrono i piatti tipici della cucina greca. Molte le bandiere greche esposte nelle strade.
- Bronze ville. È il quartiere che ospita la comunità nera. Non ci siamo andati perché sconsigliati sia dall’hotel che dall’ufficio del turismo. Ci hanno detto chiaramente “perché rischiare inutilmente per vedere un quartiere che non ha nulla da mostrare se non il disagio sociale?” E allora abbiamo rinunciato.

Millennium Park
Si trova il parco tanto voluto dall città per onorare e celebrare il nuovo millennio. I lavori sono iniziati nel 1998 ma sono stati completati solo nel 2004 (e poi dicono gli italiani!), sembra (da quanto ci dicono) non solo tra le polemiche per il ritardo ma anche per i costi (enormi) sostenuti dalla comunità per la sua realizzazione.
Il parco è dominato dal “monumento” (se così si può definire) di Chicago: il mega fagiolo (!) specchiato. Nella stagione invernale nella zona sono aperti due ring per pattinare sul ghiaccio (molto affollati!) ed inoltre c’è anche un grande Pavillon che d’estate è utilizzato per concerti ed eventi.

Mezzi pubblici
Sono comodissimi e vi serviranno molto se non vorrete utilizzare i taxi (peraltro non molto costosi). Il biglietto della metro / bus costa 2.25$ a corsa ma vi consiglio le card da 1,2 o 3 giorni. Quella da un giorno costa 5,50$ e vi permette di girare in lungo ed in largo tutta la città per 24 ore dalla timbratura (quindi scavalca la giornata, cosa da non sottovalutare).
C’è inoltre la possibilità di prendere una card alle macchinette automatiche e decidere quanto caricare. Ne potete prendere anche una sola e utilizzarla in più persone. La caricate fino a 100$ e poi niente più problemi. Acquistare il singolo biglietto è possibile ma sull’autobus è più costoso (ed inoltre non c’è possibilità di avere il resto).

Clima
D’estate è fresco. D’inverno è freddissimo. La settimana prima di Natale ha fatto -35° C di massima. Quando scende il blizzard, il vento gelido dal nord, non incontra ostacoli e piomba nel centro della città che si affaccia direttamente sul lago Michigan. Non a caso il nickname di Chicago è The Windy City perché il vento è incessante e d’inverno abbassa tantissimo la temperatura percepita.
Noi abbiamo avuto sempre la massima sotto lo zero: oscillava da -1°C fino ad arrivare a -10°C. Di notte (o meglio, dopo il tramonto che d’inverno arriva verso le 4 del pomeriggio) la temperatura è ancora più rigida. La temperatura percepita (come evidenziato da Weather Channel) arriva ad essere -17°C. Il vento non perdona. Un consiglio a tutti coloro che vogliono visitare questa bella città in inverno: non dovete dimenticare mai sciarpa, guanti e cappello. Senza non avete scampo.

Chicago Trolley
Se volete c’è la possibilità di prendere il Chicago Trolley (http://www.coachusa.com/chicagotrolley/) ovvero un bus turistico (riscaldato d’inverno) per fare un bellissimo giro della città e scendere e salire a vostro piacimento. Il biglietto costa 29$ a testa e vale tutto il giorno. Inoltre vi sarà consegnato un carnet di sconti in negozi per acquisti e piccoli snack (tra l’altro anche 1$ di sconto per entrare nella Sears Tower). Unico neo: d’inverno i passaggi non sono frequenti e rischiate di attendere (al gelo!) per 20-25 minuti prima del passaggio dell’altro “trolley”.
